Thomas Joseph Hughes was born to the late Francis M. and Catherine (Conway ) Hughes
on March 18, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He passed away on September 14, 2025 in Chicago,
Illinois under the care of hospice at home.
Tom was the second of two sons. Tom attended Our Lady of Lourdes grade school and
Elder High School on the west side of Cincinnati. He moved to Indianapolis along with his
parents after graduating from high school.
He graduated from Marian College in
Indianapolis, Indiana, where he met the love of his life, Judith Ann (Ann) Noone Hughes
Married for more than 62 years, they were the proud parents of six children: Kathleen
Hughes, the late Mary Hughes Schwane, Thomas (Karen) Hughes, William Hughes, Eileen
(Douglas) Padian, and the late Joseph Hughes. Known as Papa or Poppy to his
grandchildren, he was a beloved grandfather to Jessica (Levi) Bradford, Katie Hughes, and
Claire Padian.
Poppy was a shining example of Catholic faith and charity, always engaging
in activities like visits and learning new things with his grandchildren. Poppy enjoyed
gardening and planted gardens in the various places he and his family lived.
Tom worked at various positions with Simplicity Pattern, Cloth World and Frito-Lay as a
traffic and logistics manager, shipping merchandise to various places around the country.
Tom offered support to his children in their various endeavors and supported his family
with dedication.
In his younger years, he was active in the Knights of Columbus, served on
the Catholic school board, and served as a church usher.
Tom was preceded in death by his brother John F. Hughes and John's wife Betty Carol. He is
survived by his brother and sister-in-law Michael Noone and Margaret Noone, and by the
nieces and nephews from the Hughes and Noone families. He is also survived by the
children and grandchildren of his late cousins Rose Mary (Theuring) Bronosky , Edward
Theuring, Charles Theuring and William Theuring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 10 a.m. Central
time at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 2215 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, Illinois, 60618.
