Maria Catalina Orantes Padilla de Leal was born on an Hacienda Sebastopol, Escuintla on April 2, 1926 a quaint town nestled between the shores of the Pacific Ocean and Guatemala City near the foot hills of the Pacaya Volcano and Lake Amatitlán two rivers bordered the city from the north and the south with many streams and tributaries. This town was in the center of a rain forest with exotic birds and fauna.
She was the eldest Daughter of Julia Barillas Padilla and Virgilio Orantes Mosh. Maria Catalina had 8 siblings Efraín, Alfonzo, Celia, Neftalí, Roberto, Honorato, Victoria, Eduardo. She is survived by three siblings her sister Victoria and brothers Neftalí and Efrain.

Maria Catalina was a formidable equestrian who loved the countryside.
Maria Catalina dreamt and strived to becoming an CPA and traveling the world and learning other European Languages she often spoke about studying under the glow of the street lights in the evening for lack of electricity at home she had beautiful penmanship.
Because of the political instability in Guatemala she decided to leave and was granted an opportunity to be an Au Pair for the Kaufman family in Winnetka, Illinois.
During her days off Maria Catalina would travel to Chicago with her girlfriends and on a chance encounter she met Mauricio Leal Elizondo, it was love at first sight. After dating for several months, they decided to have a family. Together they had four children Alicia Catalina Pankhurst, Luis Mauricio (Mariluz), Carlos Efrain (Esther) and Margarita Elizabeth.
She is survived by her husband and all her children and four grandchildren: Stephanie Berkner (James), Alise Flores (Armando), Gabriel, Graciela, and great granddaughter Eliza.
Maria Catalina was a devoted mother to her children, she would go daily to see them during recess at school and bring them snacks and made sure that they were safe from harm.
Both Maria and Mauricio invoked strong values and work ethic with their children and proudly saw them graduate from Colleges and universities to be successful professionals.

María Catalina hija primogénita de Julia Barillas Padilla y Virgilio Orantes Mosh. María Catalina tuvo 8 hermanos Efraín, Alfonzo, Celia, Neftalí, Roberto, Honorato, Victoria, Eduardo (guayo). Le sobreviven su hermana Victoria y hermanos Neftalí and Efraín.

María Catalina era una jinete formidable y le encantaba estar en los campos de Guatemala.

María Catalina soñaba con ser una perita contadora y viajar el mundo y aprender otras lenguas europeas, con frecuencia platicaba que estudiaba bajo el farol de la calle por escasear electricidad en su casa. Ella tenía una bella caligrafía.

Debido a la instabilidad política en Guatemala decidió partir de su Paiz, obtuvo una oportunidad de ser un Au Pair para los Estados Unidos y se fue a vivir a Winnetka, Illinois con la familia Kaufman.

En sus días libres solía visitar Chicago con sus amigas. En un encuentro de suerte conoció a Mauricio Leal Elizondo y fue amor a primera vista. Después de varios meses de noviazgo ellos decidieron ser una familia y tener una familia juntos. Juntos tuvieron cuatro hijos Alicia Catalina Pankhurst, Luis Mauricio(Mariluz), Carlos Efraín (Esther) y Margarita Elizabeth. Le sobreviven todos su hijos y esposo. También le sobreviven cuatro nietos Stephanie Berkner (James), Alise Flores (Armando), Gabriel Andrés, Graciela Carolina, y una biznieta Eliza.

María Catalina fue madre devota, solía visitar la escuela primaria durante las horas de recreo y llevaba golosinas para sus hijos y velaba por su seguridad.

Ambos María y Mauricio inculcaron altos valores y ética de trabajo con sus hijos, los cuales con mucho orgullo vieron graduarse de universidades y convertirse en profesionales exitosos.
